The Unique Talent of Lou Rankin
Most noted wildlife artists devote much of their life to studying the animals they portray. From visiting zoos to camping in rugged terrain and watching the animals in their natural habitat, each artist finds his own muse. Sculptor Lou Rankin is no exception. As a child, the future artisan spent many pleasant afternoons watching and admiring the residents at the Los Angeles Zoo. Even at a young age, he found that each animal had its own personality and character, and it was from these early experiences that Lou Rankin drew the inspiration for his creations. He went on to study art during his college years, under the tutelage of accomplished artisans in sculpture and ceramics. It was during a period of his art studies on ancient Egypt that Lou Rankin found that animals were particularly good artistic subjects. He studied their mannerisms and behaviors – noting the unique differences and striking similarities from one species to another. He has been called “a genius as an analyst of animal psyche” that results in the remarkable personalities that each of his animal friends reflect. Although he has worked in a variety of media, the artist found that working with concrete enabled him to capture the physical, as well as the spiritual, character of each animal. By the 1960s, Lou Rankin had earned wide distinction as a sculptor, using concrete as his medium to capture the special qualities of mystery, humor, warmth and friendship in his animal friends. Beginning with the trademark tender eyes, the artist sculpts the life-like posture and facial details of each animal to impart human emotions. His original works have appeared in many leading exhibitions, are found in both public and private collections, and he has amassed numerous awards. From these extraordinary sculptures have come the heartwarming plush creations that lovingly convey a wide range of feelings that touch the heart with joy, comfort, happiness, and peace. The Encore Group proudly unveils a new chapter in the career of this beloved artist, bringing his very Best Friends to the hearts and homes of Lou Rankin admirers. Click On Picture To Enlarge |
